Obituary of Howard McKinley

Howard C. McKinley of Ocean City was called home to God on May 29, 2018. He was 93 years old. He rejoins the love of his life, Helen, having shared 69 years of marriage together. Howard was born on October 21, 1924 to Jasper and May (Fullerton) McKinley. After graduating from Lower Merion High School, Dad attended Kent State University but would be interrupted by World War II. He joined the United States Army, attended Officer Candidate School and Flight school. After the war he was reactivated by the United States Air Force and served as a pilot in the Strategic Air Command until 1958, logging some 2500 hours while flying around the globe. He then joined the F.A.A. and served as an air traffic controller in Pittsburgh and Cleveland before moving to Northfield in 1963 and working at N.A.F.E.C. in Pomona until he retired with 32 years of government service.  In his youth, he was a talented athlete and musician and as an adult played golf and enjoyed bowling well into his 80's. He and Mom served as the youth counselors for the Youth Fellowship group at Central United Methodist Church in the 60's and 70's and sang in the choir for many years. He had a role in the development of many young people at an important time in their lives. He was predeceased by his wife Helen and is survived by his sons Reid (Regina) and David (Karen), his sister Lois Finnegan, his brother -in-law and best buddy Wm. Park Seymour, his five grandchildren Jennifer Gilbert, Sean Wheatley, Christopher, Milissa and Sara McKinley and his 4 great grandchildren Katie McKinley, Dawson, Haley and Alana Gilbert. Dad will be laid to rest beside his beloved Helen on Tuesday June 5, 2018 at the Cape May County Veteran's Cemetery in Crest Haven, Cape May Court House. Those friends who wish to visit Dad may do so from 10:00 to 10:45 A.M. Tuesday June 5 followed by a brief remembrance at Godfrey Funeral Home, 644 South Shore Road Palermo, N.J. 08223. Dad requested no flowers. Donations in his memory may be given to Central United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice. For condolences to the family, visit www.godfreyfuneralhome.com.
